It is that time of year when influenza viruses circulate the United States. Per CDC and ACIP recommendations, routine annual influenza vaccination for all persons aged ≥6 months and older is the best way to prevent influenza. However, this contagious respiratory illness still infects thousands of people annually and if severe can cause serious illness, hospitalization, and sometimes death, specially to the more vulnerable population including elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with medical comorbidities. Moreover, influenza virus can become resistant to antiviral therapy; thus, having effective treatment options with various mechanism of actions is necessary to overcome the viral resistance.
Agents Currently Available at Dispensary of Hope
Dispensary of Hope currently has oseltamivir in stock. This has been the primary medication available to treat influenza for the past two decades.
In addition to oseltamivir, adjunctive therapy is necessary to relieve signs and symptoms associated with influenza infection, including fever, cough, runny nose, headache, muscles ache, and sore throat. The recommended oral dosage of oseltamivir for treatment of influenza in adults and adolescents is one capsule (75 mg) twice daily for 5 days.
