Increasing Access to Mental Health Services
Mental health awareness is gaining wider attention the United States. Mental health is our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we feel, think, and act. Mental health also influences how we handle stress and make choices. Some factors that contribute to mental health problems are biological, life experiences, and family history of mental health problems. In the WHO's 2001 report, one in four people are affected by mental health problems . Some mental health diseases include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, depression, mania, as well as others.
Dispensary of Hope's inventory contains medication for treating many disease states, including mental health issues. Dispensary of Hope offers several mental health medication including anticonvulsants, antidepressants and antipsychotics. Antidepressants can be categorized as Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, and Tricyclic Antidepressant. Antipsychotics can be divided into typical and atypical categories.
Treating mental health issues can be quite complex. It is not simply a "one drug fits all" approach. There are multiple types of antidepressants and antipsychotics that can be used and patients respond differently to different therapies. Since these drugs have different mechanisms of actions, a more individualized approach is needed when deciding on a treatment. An antidepressant, such as Amitriptyline, may work for patient A, but not have an effect at all on patient B. Having these different types of medications is important to better serve the patients' needs. Dispensary of Hope is continuing to expand the number of medications available to treat patients with mental health conditions.
