Nonadherence is a major health problem that costs approximately $300 billion in the U.S. annually.1 There are several communication tools that healthcare providers can utilize to improve patient adherence; however, finding the most appropriate tool to communicate with each patient is critical. Text messaging is a widely accepted communication tool, especially in low income and low health literacy patient population. They can be used as an effective tool, although not a substitute for professional health care, in self- management and prevention of chronic disease complications through providing individuals with information to empower them to make knowledgeable decision about their lifestyle and behaviors.
